This blog content is an introduction to my background pre-table tennis and also a report on my first five months in the sport.
We started playing ping pong on 20th 03 2015, mainly like a form of exercise pertaining to my medical condition which usually, like most, significantly helps with increasing health. I suffer from a problem called ankylosing spondylitis, which is basically joint pain of the spine leading also to spine curvature. However , what started as an appealing form of exercise, pretty quickly turned into an passion!
I’ ve always recently had an obsessive personality, do not ever being able to have loads of hobbies and interests undertaken for fun from time to time. If I do something, I can be totally targeted upon it and stay better than everyone else. This is the case when I started out playing golf at the age of 6th, turning professional by 16 after getting a handicap of +2 at 18. I spent several years as a instructing professional, before subscribing the RAF, in which I became an extremely obsessed pilot afterward flying instructor.
Unfortunately, a flying incident re-triggered my ankylosing spondylitis. After the RAF, My spouse and i joined the flight companies as a Training Chief & Simulator Teacher. Sitting on my bottom enjoying airline foodstuff piled on the pounds and exacerbated my own condition.

The ping pong begins
From that first time of playing onwards, I was totally connected! Within the next few months, I had been having regular lessons and was advancing fairly well but reached a bit of level.

I decided to aim to achieve a UK table tennis ranking (top 600) within 3 years of starting to perform and alongside that to try and raise ?100, 000 for the united kingdom ankylosing spondylitis charitable organization.
Regarding six months ago, We met up with Bill Larcombe for a instruction session for him to evaluate how I can progress more quickly. The length between us pertaining to regular sessions was too great, yet Ben put me personally in contact with a more regional coach, Marc Burman (who was Ben’ s coach once Ben was a fresh boy). Marc provides taught several Britain international players such as the current UK Number 18, Emma Torkington. Marc and I instantly hit it off and my personal progression started to elevate again.
My first competition
We played (although ‘played’ might be a large word) my initial competition in Oct 2015; the VETTS Midlands Masters. It was a real shock. I’ d been playing against good little league players for the prior few months but the majority of players in the Experts were on one more level. I actually only managed to earn a few points in each game.
Reeling from your shock of that initial tournament, I cut down my competition schedule from regarding ten events pertaining to the season to three, permitting four months to get fitter and totally focused pertaining to my next competition; the VETTS The southern part of Masters, which happened last month. The immediate target for this competition was to take in least one video game off of a player. This kind of I achieved within my last match, directly losing another in the games. So there was clearly some significant improvement since October.
Marc’s a large number of words of knowledge are working well. I believe my main problem is definitely my frustration with myself – planning to improve much more quickly than is actually feasible. I’ ve considered the way round this can be to have micro-targets practically for every practice workout and every match. This will likely commence in Drive so I’ lmost all let you know how it’ s working in another update at the beginning of The spring.
My own penultimate competition in this season is the VETTS Northern Masters in 19th & twentieth April, in Blackpool. The target for this function is to win a match over the weekend. And alongside my ping pong objectives, I’ meters intending to get a great fitter and make an effort to lose four natural stone in weight.
